What is a dental phobia?

Imagine the following scenario:

You walk down the street and see a commercial for a dental office. It reminds you that you have long delayed your visit to the dentist. Even on that thought your heart starts to accelerate quickly, cold sweat gets you, you feel shaken and nauseated. To avoid discomfort, you go to the opposite side of the street and move away quickly.

Did you recognize this description? If you had, it is possible that you suffer from dental phobia.

Causes of dental phobia

Dental phobias are most often caused by bad experience at a dentist. Studies indicate that up to 85% of dental phobia can be reduced to this cause. It should be borne in mind that this nasty experience does not only consist of physical pain, but also psychological and emotional, e.g. in the form of humiliation by the dentist.

Problems with seeing a dentist may also occur in persons who have suffered physical, mental or sexual abuse. Therefore, abuse by a person with authority in combination with bad dental experience also contributes to the development of dental phobia.

Although there is a general belief that people avoid dental procedures because they generally have a fear of pain, but that is not necessary. A proof to the contrary is that a person suffering from a dental phobia is able to withstand severe pain over long periods, in spite of them, does not want to see a dentist. The cause of the dental phobia may be the roughness of the dentist, i.e. the fear of the pain caused by a careless dentist.

Dental phobia is very often caused by humiliating and careless dentist or dental centre staff remarks addressed to the patient.

Adopting a dental phobia based on observation of fear or intimidation by other persons. In this case, dental phobias arise without traumatic experience from the past. Inciting fear from dental procedures exist in various forms: from scary stories of parents and peers, to stereotypes about the roughness of dentists in the media, movies and cartoons. However, studies show that the observation of persons with fear of dentist or the ones intimidating others has no major influence on the development of dental phobia.

People may have a predisposition to learn some phobias, e.g. a needle injection phobia. It is a genetic predisposition that is based on learning of the fear from a potentially harmful phenomena, such as snake bite, height, or lightning.

People who learned and acquired these fears during evolution were likely to have more chances to survive and transfer their genes onto their offspring.

After a bad experience with a dentist, symptoms may be typical of PTSD (posttraumatic stress disorder). These are usually forced thoughts about bad experience, nightmares about dental experiences, etc. This in turn encourages the development of a dental phobia.

Types of fears from dental procedures

Fear of dental procedures has a variety of shapes. When we feel moderate fear due to a previously experienced painful or uncomfortable dental experience, this is a common dental fear. It’s a natural reaction. Dental fear does not prevent us from maintaining dental health because we can control it.

Then, there is a dental anxiety. It’s a fear of a dental treatment that we have to do for the first time in life. Basically, it’s a rational fear of the unknown. This form of fear does not prevent us from going to the dentist and also falls into natural reactions.

However, there is a powerful, irrational fear of dental treatment that we are unable to control. It causes various psychosomatic reactions preventing us to go to see a dentist. Such fear is called dental phobia.
