Tooth filling

Tooth filling includes procedures to remedy tooth damage. Although the tooth can be damaged in a variety of ways, the most commonly known is caries. Restorative dentistry is one of the most common dental procedures. This is both yours and our attempt to preserve the tooth from irretrievable loss.

To begin with, let’s find out the main reason why we repair the teeth, caries.

What is caries?

Caries is one of the most wide spread diseases of today. It is caused by the cariogenic bacteria and is equally common in children and adults. In addition to the presence of bacteria, a number of other preconditions occurs for formation of caries.

  • Cariogenic bacteria: the main cause of caries because they produce acid that destroys the tooth.
  • Poor nutrition: a diet rich in sweetened foods and drinks favors the development of cariogenic bacteria.
  • Poor oral hygiene: irregular removal of cariogenic bacteria from the oral cavity leaves room for their harmful effects.
  • Irregular visits to the dentist: the dentist will notice the development of the caries this timely detection increases the chances to save the tooth.

Interesting facts about caries

Cariogenic bacteria can be transferred from a person to a person. In particular, children whose immune system has not yet been developed are particularly vulnerable. Parents who “wash” a spoon or baby’s pacifier after they fall onto the floor and return them to the child, expose the child to risk of caries. Given the fact that caries may be passed on, the experts refer to it today as an infectious disease.

Poor diet and the emergence of caries

Although sweets are not the only foods that favor the emergence of caries, due to high content of simple sugars, they particularly favor the development of cariogenic bacteria.

Along with sweets, you should generally be careful with carbohydrate-based foods. When digested in the mouth, some carbohydrates break down into simple sugars and participate in the formation of harmful acid for the teeth.

Such foods include juices, various fruits, e.g. bananas, and salty snacks such as pretzels or crackers.

Foods like sticky candies are particularly dangerous to teeth health. Due to their texture, the sugars from these foods are more strongly attached to the surface of the teeth.

Besides the foods we consume, it is important to pay attention to the way we consume them. Constant snacking and drinking of a variety of sugary and generally carbohydrate-based foods during the day results in a steady flow of fresh food for bacteria.

Caries can cause permanent teeth loss.

Tooth repair and caries removal

Because of all this timely removal of caries and tooth filling are very important. In this way we can prevent serious damage or even teeth loss. Caries can only be removed by a dentist. The missing part of the tooth is removed and the resulting hole is filled by “filling”.

There are several types of filling, and most often we apply an esthetic or composite filling. It should be noted that once the most used type of filling, amalgam filling, popularly called “lead filling” is almost no longer used. The main reasons why this filling almost disappeared in the contemporary western world are poor esthetic properties and the use of heavy metals in its production.

In Videntis Dental Center we pay particular attention that our esthetic fillings stay true to their name. Aesthetic filling is made of a composite material in the same shade as the tooth to which it is applied.

Today’s composite materials have excellent properties and durability, while esthetic filling does not differ from the natural tooth. We also take care to shape the fissures, lumps on the tooth crown, and to ensure perfect bite. Thanks to quality local anesthesia, the entire tooth filling is painless.

Oral hygiene as caries prevention

A natural tooth is far superior to all its substitutes. In order to preserve it, we need to maintain quality oral hygiene. Oral hygiene is a set of activities we take to keep the oral cavity clean so that it can prevent teeth and gum disease. Poor oral hygiene and the emergence of these diseases are closely related.

Regular teeth brushing (3 x a day) and use of a dental floss (1 x a day) can provide sufficient oral cavity hygiene. In addition, it is recommended to see a dentist twice a year for a check up and removal of calculus in order to establish a healthy teeth and gum environment.

7 rules of good prevention:

  • Wash your teeth after each meal
  • Use dental floss twice a day
  • Do not chew something in your mouth all day
  • Do not sip something sweet all day
  • Avoid sticky sweet food
  • If you need sweets opt for fruit or nuts with some black chocolate
  • Visit a dentist at least once in 6 months
