Why install a dental implant?

We can approach the problem of missing teeth in two ways:

  1. a traditional prosthodontics supported by dental flesh, jaw bone, and remaining healthy teeth, or,
  2. with the installation of an artificial root canal – dental implant, on which we place a prosthetic dental replacement crown, dental bridge or prosthesis.

In any way it is important not to ignore the problem of missing one or more teeth, no matter which of these two approaches we are more inclined.

Consequences of missing teeth

Each patient will easily agree that tooth loss is generally a cosmetic problem. However, it is also a serious health, functional and emotional problem, as we will explain below.

Do you notice that your teeth are moving away from each other?

Due to the natural resorption process, the jaw bone is withdrawn at the site of the lost tooth, along with the dental flesh. This process can lead to a number of dental problems: the chewing forces of the surrounding teeth will begin to collapse toward a vacant position that can eventually lead to their loss. This is preceded by more and more noticeable gap between the remaining teeth, the food often stuck between the teeth, and we are more exposed to caries and bad breath.

Does the look of your face change?

It is also worth mentioning that the facial esthetics is also changing. In persons missing even one tooth it we can notice hollow cheeks and other changes in appearance.

However, apart from esthetics and dental health, the problem of missing teeth can undermine two more areas that affect the quality of life of an individual.

Are you avoiding certain food?

A person missing a tooth will have problems consuming some food or will completely stop eating some foods. They will transfer the food to the part of the jaw that is firm and complete which will further enhance the decay of the jawbone on a side not stimulated by chewing. In the long run, persistent chewing of food on one side will result in an uneven load on the jaw joint, thus disrupting its stability. Solving the consequences of weariness and instability of the jaw joints really expands the scope of dentistry and even crosses the border.

Are you hiding your smile?

The area which the problem of missing teeth visibly affects is the emotional and social image of the individual about themselves. If some of our front teeth are missing, such as an incisor or a canine, we will not dare to smile in front of the people for whom we want to leave a good impression. A wide and cordial smile can reveal even the lack of premolars or molars. With a bad self-image, an individual will often shy away from social contacts and their self-confidence in business contacts will be lowered.

Selection: traditional prosthodontics or implant solutions?

From all of the above it is clear that the solution to the problem of the lack of teeth should not be delayed or ignored. traditional prosthodontics and implant solutions are two different ways of dealing with this problem, however, there are significant differences between them that need to be considered before making a final decision.

Features of traditional prosthodontics

As far as the esthetic aspects are concerned, and to a large extent health and functional problems regarding the lack of teeth are concerned, traditional prosthodontics is still a good choice. Howevery, its greatest competitive advantage is more affordable price.

Besides the price, it should be mentioned that traditional prosthodontics do not require oral surgery that requires long-term recovery. If a patient opts for prosthodontic solution, everything can be finished within a few days, up to several weeks. In the meantime, it is possible to wear a temporary prosthetic solution, so the waiting can subjectively seem shorter.

Nevertheless, it should be honestly said that traditional prosthodontics have serious shortcomings in relation to comparable implantable solutions.

Advantages of implant solutions

The basic advantage of dental implants in relation to traditional prosthodontics is the following fact, scientifically and practically confirmed:

installed dental implants will integrate into the jawbone and achieve a healthy and functional whole as it was once created by your natural tooth.

Traditional prosthodontics will only achieve a minor segment of that harmony. Particular weaknesses is evident in solutions like a dental bridge made in the traditional prosthodontistry.

Comparison: dental bridge

For example, in order to fasten the dental bridge, we have to grind, practically sacrifice, two perfectly healthy surrounding teeth. Dental flesh and jaw bone at the site of the missing teeth will continue to retreat, as the ordinary dental bridge has no contact with them. Over time, the entire structure can seriously lose its stability and lead to loss of the two abutment teeth.

Quite the opposite, the bridge on the dental implant will improve regeneration of the jawbone and consequently health of the dental flesh while preserving the health of the adjacent teeth.

Comparison: total prosthesis

Furthermore, total dentures based on traditional prosthodontics are movable by nature. Their mobility is often a major source of discomfort and creates a feeling of foreign body in patients. These dentures are also less reliable for chewing or other jaw movements, especially the lower jaw.

Unlike them, the total dentures performed on implants either in fixed or semi-fixed type require far less time to get used to and provide the safety of their own teeth to patients while eating, laughing and speaking.

Comparison: durability and repair

Last, but not least, good quality dental implants with proper maintenance should last forever. Prosthetic solutions based on them can be easily removed, restored, repaired or replaced if necessary. Traditional prosthodontics can also be renewed and repaired, but only if it is removable. Crowns and bridges are usually cemented permanently, so they cannot be removed and repaired without being destroyed by such an attempt.

Reasons for dental implant installation

Returning to the question from the beginning, we can say that the reasons for dental implants are the following:

  1. You want a fixed solution that protects the jaw health
  2. You want a durable solution that can be renewed and repaired
  3. You want a durable solution that can last for a lifetime
